Dunshaughlin pip hosts in thrilling Road Relay Championships
The annual Meath Road Relay championships took place on the Newline at Neilstown earlier this month and were promoted by Bohermeen Athletic Club.
Over 20 teams took part in the men's and ladies contests, including from the hosts Bohermeen, Dunboyne, Dunshaughlin, Ratoath, Moynalty, Trim, Fr Murphy, Navan and Star of Sea. The events uniqueness allowed participants under-15 take part in legs one and two, while juniors and adults ran legs three and four over the longer distances.
The ladies' event went off at 9.30 am, and Ratoath ladies retained their title posting 28 minutes 58 seconds for the cumulative five mile distance with Bohermeen taking silver, posting 30 minutes, and Ratoath B were third posting 30:54.
The mens race started at 10.10am and with legs of 800 metres, a mile, a miles and a half and the final leg over two miles, the result wasn’t often clear until the final leg.
Defending champions for the past couple of years, Bohermeen looked destined to lose their crown as they sat in fourth going in to the last leg, but with Kevin McGrath, the 2025 National indoor senior 800m winner, clocking a very impressive nine 9:33 for the two miles he brought Bohermeen home in silver position.
Dunshaughlin were led home to win the Mattie McGrath Memorial trophy on the final leg by Sean O’Connor, who was third in the Meath senior cross-country championship last December. The Dunboyne men held well to take the bronze team medals in grade A.
