Summerhill designer bids for Super Garden title in tonight’s final
A young Summerhill designer will bid for Super Garden glory tonight as the final of the popular RTÉ competition airs.
Sean Melia, who at just 20 years of age is one of the youngest designers ever to compete on the show, has reached the final of this year’s series following weeks of competition.
Gardening runs deep in the Melia family, with Sean previously revealing there have been ten generations of gardeners before him.
“It was never really a surprise that I ended up going into horticulture,” he said.
After leaving school, Sean pursued his passion professionally and is currently completing an apprenticeship through the National Botanic Gardens.
The series has carried extra significance for the family, as Sean’s father Dermot previously appeared on Super Garden in 2020.
Dermot impressed viewers and judges alike with his spectacular design during his season, but narrowly missed out on overall victory.
Now Sean is hoping to succeed where his father fell just short and bring the title home to the family.
This year’s series of Super Garden has been filmed in Millrace, a new social housing development in Ashbourne delivered by Meath County Council.
The programme followed five designers as they each took over the garden of a newly housed family and transformed blank outdoor spaces over just three weeks with a budget of €15,000.
The overall winner will earn the opportunity to recreate their garden at Bord Bia Bloom, Ireland’s premier gardening and food festival.
The final of Super Garden airs tonight on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player at 7pm.
