Sherlock Holmes has been kidnapped as his teenage sleuth sister prepares to tie the knot in a first look at Enola Holmes 3.
The upcoming film sees Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown star as the mystery-solving sister of detective Sherlock Holmes, as she travels to Malta for her most treacherous case yet.
The action-packed trailer, released by Netflix on Wednesday, shows the sleuth confronted with life-threatening situations in the run up to her wedding to Lord Tewkesbury, played by Louis Partridge.
It opens with a loved-up montage of the couple, set to a version of Edith Piaf’s Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien, which sees the couple dancing, laughing and playing games together, and swimming in the sea.
Brown, 22, can be heard in the background and says: “Life was everything I wanted it to be, and it was just the two of us. Those were the best times of all.
“So, whilst my life seemed completely uncomplicated, my dear, dear Lord decided to add a slight complication.”
The trailer then shows Partridge’s character popping the question to the shocked detective, with a ring seemingly made from flowers, and he says: “Enola Eudoria Holmes will you take I, Ernest Augustus of the House of Tewkesbury, to be your husband?”
Holmes appears shocked and tells her partner “yes”, before breaking the fourth wall and addressing the audience as she said: “I was surprised too.”
The trailer descends into chaos, and the sleuth is seen in life-threatening situations such as jumping from the balcony of a burning, collapsing building.
Brown is then seen wearing a wedding dress and veil, sitting in the back of a horse-drawn carriage and seemingly on the way to her wedding, before being stopped by a frantic Dr John Watson (Himesh Patel).
It cuts to dramatic scenes of Superman star Henry Cavill, who plays detective Sherlock Holmes, being attacked by masked individuals and having a black bag placed over his head.
As we return to Dr Watson’s conversation with the sleuth’s sister, Enola, he says: “It’s your brother. Sherlock has been kidnapped.”
Following the bride’s shocked reaction, a montage of clips show fireworks and fight scenes as well as a glimpse of Helena Bonham Carter as Brown’s on-screen mother, the fiercely independent Eudoria Holmes.
The trailer ends with Partridge waiting at the altar for his bride, being assured she is on her way, but it is then revealed Holmes is climbing atop her horse drawn carriage with a gun in hand as she fights off an unseen threat.
The Enola Holmes films have been adapted by Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne from Nancy Springer’s series of mystery novels about the teenage detective and sister of Sherlock Holmes.
In the latest film Philip Barantini, also known for Netflix hit Adolescence, takes over as director from Harry Bradbeer, and it has been co-produced by Brown.
Brown’s husband and the son of musician Jon Bon Jovi, Jake Bongiovi, has been named as an executive producer on the project.
It will also star Susan Wokom, as well as Sharon Duncan-Brewster – who will reprise her role as a reimagined version of manipulative mastermind Moriarty called Mira Troy.
Enola Holmes 3 will be released on Netflix on July 1st.
