Chalk Talk St Oliver's Special: ‘Never give up and keep your dreams alive’ - Ms Byrne

Marie Byrne

Hello St Oliver Plunkett’s NS connections.

I had the pleasure of working there for nearly 20 years in my, dare I say much younger years. I had the privilege of interacting with you all teachers, caretaker, reverend fathers, parents, visitors and especially you the children now adults.

Can you believe it? Adults? You were like new stars shining brightly and had dreams. You said everything straight out. It was inspiring for me and so cute but all good.

My girls grew up in the school with me. Over time I was involved with Olympic Handball - many of you played. We invested a lot of time in it, why because you made it worthwhile and taught me too what was achievable and everyone has gifts. I brought the first Irish team to the World Championships in Italy – some of you were there. Having played on the Irish team.

I subsequently became President of Olympic Handball in Ireland and representative in Europe. I always remember the children and staff who have passed on - reminding me of the value of time regardless of age - families are so resilient.

It was natural that my following career would then involve families, from attending the University of Kent at Canterburyand training internationally to the privilege of working with families and governments all over the world. Meeting past pupils en route eg in Australia as director of Parent to Parent Australia, Brazil, Ireland even an occasional Garda and more. It was natural the charity evolved.

Somehow I wrote two books, Angel In The Marble for families and prevention of addiction and January River (Rio de Janeiro) while based at the Police Headquarters in Rio with their support. Always life challenges. Much was influenced by my contact with you in the beginning and it grew. So thank you for the time and memories you gave me. Never give up and keep your dreams alive. I was helped along the way by many.

With much love and gratitude. Here’s to the next 50!
