MEP Nina presents Pope with horse racing book

Leo XIV blesses rosary beads for daughter's First Holy Communion

It was a weekend to remember for Ratoath MEP Nina Carberry, who described it as a “great honour” to meet Pope Leo XIV during a recent visit to the Vatican.

Nina was in Rome as part of the European People’s Party (EPP) Group Study Days in the European Parliament, where discussions centred on democracy and the importance of meaningful public engagement. Reflecting on the experience, she noted how insightful it was to hear the Pope’s views at a time when division can often dominate public discourse.

During the visit, the former Fairyhouse Grand National-winning jockey also had the opportunity to present a gift close to her heart — a book exploring the rich history of National Hunt and Point-to-Point racing in Ireland, written by Frances Nolan from Batterstown. Given the Pope’s reported interest in horses, the gesture carried added significance and personal meaning.

However, it was a quieter, deeply personal moment that stood out most. Ahead of her daughter’s First Holy Communion, which takes place in just two weeks, Carberry had her rosary beads blessed — a gesture she described as particularly special for their family.
