Man drove off with garda holding door

Judge Eirinn McKiernan commented it was lucky the outcome was not a lot worse when referring to a young motorist who drove off with a Garda Sergeant holding the door of a car.

Jimmy Raymond (24), of Claremont Estate, Navan was charged with dangerous driving as a result of the incident on 23rd November 2022 at Ballynavaddog, Kilmessan.

Trim District Court heard that no injuries occurred. The Sergeant had opened the door of the car when the defendant engaged it in first gear and took off.

The 24 year-old defendant apologised to the Sergeant, his solicitor Maurice Regan said, describing the defendant’s action as stupid.

He said the defendant has been doing very well, staying at home and working out in the gym and playing sport. Judge McKiernan said she was considering imposing a custodial sentence, with the defendant’s previous convictions and circumstances involved.

Mr Regan urged the Judge to defer sentence.

Judge McKiernan sentenced the defendant to two months imprisonment, and disqualified him from driving for four years. She took into consideration other summonses
