Navan Tidy Towns lifts over 1,200kg of litter from Navan’s streets and lanes in just seven months
Navan Tidy Towns has removed a total of 1,213kg of litter from Navan’s streets and lanes in just seven months.
Volunteer teams have been litter picking in Navan since last September and in February they started the 'Grab and Go' initiative which gets people out on their own time and clean up when they have a free hour or two.
“The buy-in from the community has been heart-warming,” said secretary, Cllr Emer Tóibin.
She said the committee had spent a couple of hours recently in Navan Shopping Centre for a recruitment drive to attract more people to get involved.
“It was a great success. So many signed up on the spot, which will be a massive boost to the fantastic clean-up work happening across the town and the Ramparts. We have around 70 to 80 members now. They won't all be out every week, but there has been a really great take up. It really make a difference.”
The impact of the Tidy Towns group since its re-establishment last September has been very promising.
Between September and December they collected 442kg of rubbish and from January to March they collected 528kg.
The new 'Grab and Go' initiative has resulted in the collection of 243kg of rubbish.
“This has been an amazing community effort and with new volunteers on board, this momentum is only going to grow. However, we should see the volume of rubbish needing to be picked up, decrease,” said Cllr Tóibin.
She explained that local businesses have “adopted” spots in the town that they will be responsible for, and the local schools have also adopted spots.
“We are also hoping that people will look after their own areas. All of this work is helping to make Navan a more attractive, welcoming, and well-cared-for town. It makes a big difference. We are very optimistic about the future.
“If you would like to get involved, whether it's for an hour a month or an hour a week, make contact with us and like our social media pages for details about upcoming clean-ups,” she said.
