Boyerstown farmer says measures introduced by Government 'nowhere near enough'
FARMERS’ VIEW
A BOYERSTOWN farmer has voiced his support for ongoing protests by farmers and truck drivers over rising fuel costs, describing the current measures introduced by Government as “nowhere near enough.”
Beef farmer Patrick Wall said he stands in “full support” of those taking part in demonstrations, although he is currently unable to attend in person due to the demands of the calving season.
“I am in full support of the farmers and the truck drivers,” he said. “At the moment I cannot make the protests because I am very busy with cows having calves, but I have been putting up videos in support of them.
“I believe they should be encouraged to keep going until the Government listens, not told not to protest. The right to protest is a basic right,” he said.
His comments come as concerns continue to be raised within the farming and haulage sectors regarding the cost of fuel, with many arguing that recent Government measures do not go far enough.
“The Government has now announced another 10 cents off ordinary diesel, but only another 2.4 cents off green diesel for farmers. That is nowhere near enough,” he said.
He added that rising costs are placing increased pressure on farmers and others working in primary industries, with many forced to look at alternative sources of income.
“Like a lot of people, I have had to find another way to make ends meet, which is why I also do Airbnb. It feels like every time ordinary people try to make an honest living, whether through farming, haulage or earning a bit extra on the side, the Government are making it harder instead of easier,” he added.
