Slane Castle 5km returns in aid of local school

The popular Slane Castle 5km Trail Run/Walk is set to return next month, with organisers preparing for another strong turnout at the scenic Boyne Valley location.

Now in its 11th year, the event will take place on Sunday, May 24th, with a 9.30am start within the grounds of Slane Castle.

Organised by the Parents’ Association of St Patrick’s National School in Slane, the annual run and walk is the group’s main fundraiser, with all proceeds going towards the ongoing development of outdoor learning spaces at the school.

Last year’s event attracted more than 400 participants, and a similar level of interest is expected again this year.

The 5km route is fully contained within the castle estate and includes forest trails along the banks of the River Boyne, offering participants a chance to experience the grounds in a unique way.

Slane Castle owner Alex Mount Charles welcomed the return of the event, describing it as a “fantastic community initiative” that he has supported since it began.

He said he looks forward to welcoming runners, joggers and walkers of all abilities to the castle grounds once again.

Keatings Oil has come on board as the main sponsor for this year’s event, which is supported by Meath Local Sports Partnership and Civil Defence.

The route is suitable for all fitness levels, including walkers and families with buggies, making it an accessible event for the wider community.

Participants can also look forward to refreshments on the day, with home baking provided after the race.

T-shirts will be available for the first 200 adult and 200 under-16 participants, while medals will be awarded to the first 400 finishers.

After race refreshments and yummy home baked goods will be available free of charge to all who support the event.

The route is suitable for all walkers, joggers, runners and even buggy pushers, regardless of ability or fitness level.

Early bird registration is now open online, with organisers encouraging those interested to sign up in advance.

Parking will be available on the castle grounds, with organisers reminding attendees that pets are not permitted.

The event continues to grow in popularity each year, offering a family-friendly day out while supporting a local school initiative.

Early bird registration is €20 for adults, €10 for secondary school students and €5 for primary school children, with on-the-day adult entry priced at €25. Details can be found here
