Sentenced after supermarket thefts
A 28 year-old man pleaded guilty to a series of thefts from a Supervalu store in Enfield. A total of over €3,000 worth of goods, mainly alcohol and groceries were taken by the defendant over a 12 day period, Trim District Court heard.
Rainis Koovit with an address at Paramount Hotel, Exchange Street Upper, Dublin appeared in custody via video link. He pleaded guilty to eight thefts from the store on dates between the end of October and 12th November last year.
Sergeant Declan Brady said that the defendant entered the store on different dates, picked up the items, concealed them and left the premises. He made no effort to pay. He made a full admission.
Mr Koovit had 119 previous convictions.
His barrister Paul Noctor said the defendant suffered from an alcohol addiction. He asked the Judge not to extend the defendant’s stay in custody. It was stated he was due for release on 12th June this year.
The defendant explained at the time his girlfriend was pregnant and had a baby.
Judge Ciaran Liddy imposed a jail term of a year on the defendant of which he suspended six months. He ordered the defendant to stay out of Supervalu.
