New footpath and bus shelters approved for Donacarney

Plans have been confirmed for a new footpath and bus shelters in Donacarney, in a move welcomed as a significant boost for pedestrian safety and public transport access.

Meath County Council will install a new footpath between the old Community Centre and the bus stop on the Garra Road.

The works will be carried out in conjunction with the installation of two new bus shelters at the same location.

Local Fianna Fail Cllr McKee said he was pleased the long-awaited project had been approved and that construction is expected to begin this summer.

“There is a clear and urgent need to ensure that local families can safely access local bus services.”

The section of road has long been highlighted as lacking adequate pedestrian infrastructure despite increasing residential development nearby.

“The provision of a safe, accessible footpath from the community centre down to the bus stops has been a long-standing priority of mine, so I am happy to see this project moving forward,”said McKee. “I have been lobbying the Council about the need for a footpath at this location over the last few years. This is good news for Donacarney residents.”

The announcement follows confirmation that bus shelters will also be installed this year on the Garra Road, Donacarney, close to Castle Glen, under the Council’s Schedule of Works Programme 2026.

Cllr McKee said the installation of the shelters marks the beginning of what he hopes will be a broader rollout of improved facilities at bus stops across East Meath.

He added that residents have highlighted the need for better shelter and accessibility at a number of locations.

Highlighting ongoing population growth in the area, he said investment in public transport infrastructure is essential.

“With the population growth in the area, residents need to be able to access high-quality public transport services. We need to improve all transport and public services, including basic infrastructure such as bus shelters and footpaths,” he concluded.
