Six gardai needed to subdue man who resisted removal from court

It took six gardai to overpower and subdue a 20 year-old man to end a terrifying episode in Trim courtroom on Thursday.

The man broke away as he resisted his removal from his seat on the prisoners’ bench to bring him into custody.

He briefly adopted a fighting posture before darting past the witness box on the same side towards the Judge’s bench and crossed over behind where the court staff are stationed to the well beside the other witness box on the far side of court room.

Gardai responded by clambering over the raised benches and captured the man pinning him to the ground in a violent struggle before hand cuffing and bringing him into the custody area.

The man was taken into the court just before the district court sitting was about to conclude in the afternoon

A Garda gave evidence that he arrested him that morning on foot of a bench warrant.

The witness told that the man breached conditions of his bail, and applied to have his bail revoked.

Judge Ciaran Liddy noted the conditions of bail were rather routine, but within 48 hours there were five separate breaches.

He revoked bail and ordered the man be remanded in custody for a week to the sitting on 1st May.

As Garda approached him in his seat, the man resisted as they tried to get him to come with them.
