In Pictures: Easter Sunday Commemoration at Ardbraccan
The Easter Sunday Commemoration at Ardbraccan began with a walk down the Church Avenue from the 1916-2016 commemoration stone at Ardbraccan crossroads behind the Scottish piper Duncan Coull to the graveside of the late Vol George McDermott who was killed at Curraghtown in 1923.
The annual commemoration has taken place at his grave since his first anniversary in 1923 and on Sunday it like many events all over Ireland it also commemorated the 1916 Easter Rising. The main speaker on Sunday was Deputy Darren O’Rourke.
The historical commemoration has seen many political figures give the oration over the years, in 1932 the late Mick Hilliard attended and spoke at the graveside. A few years after the passing of George McDermott it was reported in the Meath Chronicle that his uncle had passed and was believed to be the last living person to have heard Daniel O’Connell speak at the Hill of Tara in 1843.
