New ramp designed to give Navan cyclists a lift

A bicycle ramp will be provided on the steps from Navan's Circular Road to St Finians Tce later this year.

The ramp, which will allow cyclists easily push a bicycle along beside the steps, will give easier access to Railway Street to cyclists.

At last week's meeting of Navan Municipal Council, the Mayor Cllr Eddie Fennessy called for the provision of such a ramp and was told the Transportation Department was currently reviewing options to provide a bicycle wheel channel/track on the existing steps from Circular Road to St Finian’s Terrace and the installation works are to be completed later this year.

Cllr Fennessy said he is delighted the council agreed to provide a bicycle ramp at that location.

"A cycle lift at that location will enhance the connectivity options in the area. It will make it easier and quicker to climb the hill. Kids and older people will certainly benefit from it.

“It will be of huge benefit to local cyclists and I look forward to its construction."

Donal O'Murchu said the Navan Cycling Initiative is very pleased that Meath Co Council have decided to install a bike ramp on the steps at the back of St Finian's Terrace.

"Older cyclists and other less confident cyclists find cycling up Circular Road to the Solstice roundabout intimidating. It is planned to install a cycle lane on Circular Rd in due course but the hill will still be a grind for many of my vintage. The installation of bike ramps on the steps from the foot of Circular Road to St Finian's Terrace will provide an easy and safe option to bypass this hill and access the Library, Solstice Arts Centre and cycle-friendly Railway Street. The works on Railway Steet and the Trim Road are very close to completion and we will very soon have cycle lanes from Beechmount to the Solstice."

Mr O'Murchu said the installation of a similar bike ramp on the steps at Spireview Way would provide a quiet cycle route from Johnstown Village to St Stephen's school campus and would connect to the Johnstown cycle lanes.
