24km of Boyne to Lakelands Greenway is now open

The opening of the latest stretch of the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway between Wilkinstown and Castletown means that 24kms of the greenway are now open.

This is the final piece in the jigsaw to link up Navan and Kilmainhamwood with a further three kilometres towards Kingscourt also due to open shortly.

Announcing the opening of the section between Wilkinstown and Castletown, Cllr Eugene Cassidy said a safety audit was carried out on Thursday and it was agreed it was safe to open to the public with works substantially completed. The remaining works, which includes road crossings and dust rolling, will be finished in the coming weeks. Cllr Cassidy said with so many people already using it, they felt they couldn't hold back opening this stretch of the greenway.

“This is brilliant news and means we now have 24 km from Navan to Kilmainhamwood of the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway open. With a further works near completion, it won't be long till we have the full 30km of this fantastic greenway opened for people to enjoy walking or cycling in a safe environment in our beautiful North Meath countryside.

“I also would like to acknowledge the magnificent facilities Brendan and Eimear Doughty have provided adjacent to their premises in Wilkinstown. A greenway needs to provide the services/amenities for people using a greenway and this will be to the Boyne Valley to Lakelands greenway what Kilmacthomas is to the Waterford Greenway. They have taken a massive leap of faith in the future of this greenway and I hope they will be rewarded for doing so.”
