Rear-Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort 1774-1857

Favourable wind behind plan for Flowerhill mural of Beaufort

The regeneration of Flowerhill in Navan will include artworks recognising Sir Francis Beaufort - the Irish hydrographer who invented wind force scale - who was born in the area in 1774.

At a meeting of Navan Municipal District last week, Cllr Francis Deane proposed that a mural to commemorate Sir Francis Beaufort be displayed in a suitable location on Flowerhill, as part of the Regeneration Plan.

He was told the Flowerhill Abbeylands Urban Design Plan proposes to recognise Sir Francis Beaufort and his associations to the area through appropriate artworks. It is intended that the frontage improvement scheme project and the streetscape enhancement project will provide these artworks subject to consultation with Meath Arts Office and appropriate consents being in place.

Cllr Deane also asked the meeting for the proposed position on Kennedy Road for the relocation of the William Battersby bench.

He was told the bench is currently in storage and the intention is to put it back on Kennedy Road, but, the precise location has not yet been agreed. Meath County Council, the designer and the contractor will carry out a walkover survey of the site and agree a suitable location in due course.
