Works on new St Mary's Special School to continue

Works on the long-awaited new school building for St Mary's Special School on the Johnstown Education Campus are continuing at pace with the school due to be delivered for January of next year.

Also included it the contract for the second phase of the Johnstown Education Campus is the extension to Coláiste na Mí to include Sion House and St Martha’s College, as well as a new PE Hall.

The contractor for the build is Ganson and McCarthy O'Hora are the architects.

The project will be delivered in three phases with the first due for completion in January. This will include St Mary's Special School and also the PE Hall and changing rooms, two science labs, a music room and construction room for Coláiste na Mí. Precast is being put in at the moment by O'Reilly’s Concrete.

The second phase, which includes two special needs units, and works on the link building to the listed Sion House and St Martha’s is due for completion a year later in January 2025.

The final phase will be completed by the summer of 2025 and will include removal of the existing prefabs.

Colaiste na Mi opened in August 2013 with 85 in temporary accommodation and moved to its Johnstown site in January 2014 when the first phase to cater for 450 students opened. There are now over 800 students in the school, many of whom are being taught in prefabs pending delivery of the second phase of the school building.
