Letters to the Editor: Remembering ‘Our Vicky’

(Editor, Meath Chronicle)

Dear Sir,

Vicky Phelan was a daughter, a sister, a wife and a mother, she was also a wonderful loyal friend to anyone lucky enough to call her a friend.

We all know about the cervical cancer scandal and how the people that made mistakes were in a position to cover up, and it didn’t cost them a thought.

All those beautiful young women were handed a death sentence in the prime of their lives, through no fault of their own.

Instead of owning up to the massive mistakes made and showing respect for those women, they were dragged through the courts even though some of them were at death’s door.

How in God’s name could anyone in their right mind think that it was acceptable to do that? Ireland should hang its head in shame over how the whole situation was handled.

The cervical cancer scandal is a massive blot on Ireland’s copy book, as we all know it’s not the first and we know it won’t be the last.

Money is an awful motivator and it always makes those in authority run for cover. It’s high time those in power realised that honesty is always the best policy. Lies and cover ups only add fuel to the fire that is already raging.

Thank you, Vicky, for your courage and bravery you will always hold a special place in the hearts of the decent women and men of Ireland. That’s why you will always be ‘Our Vicky’.

Yours

Tess Ryan
