Brave Sofia cutting it fine to help Navan animal sanctuary

A 13-year-old Trim girl is getting her first ever haircut later this month to raise funds for the Back Into Daylight animal sanctuary in Navan.

Sofia McCaffrey will have her very tresses trimmed at the animal sanctuary this Saturday (19th November). The hair will be donated to the Little Princess Trust, which supplies children undergoing cancer treatment with wigs or weaves.

Her mum, Georgina explains that Sofia never had a haircut before and she will be getting around 26” of her hair cut off.

"Sofia's main goal is to help raise much needed funds for the Back into Daylight sanctuary and help raise awareness of the facility.

"She really wants to help this great cause."

Sofia, her mum, her dad, Graham and brother, Ted, are all animal lovers - they currently have six cats and kittens and a dog at home.

"We all love animals and since Covid hit, we had a lot of time on our hands we started to learn more about animal welfare and we are now all vegans."

Sofia made the brave decision to organise this fundraiser, while she was a patient at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda.

"She spent ten days in hospital recently. She is now fully recovered, but while she was there, she decided she wanted to get her hair cut for charity and to donate the hair to children who need it.

"Sofia has visited the sanctuary, met some of the residents and helped clean out chicken coops. She is aware they have a lot of mouths to feed between chickens, goats, cows and pigeons."

Georgina explains that Sofia has been homeschooled since the Covid pandemic, and even taught herself German since she was at home.

However she is starting back to school this month as a first year in Scoil Mhuire in Trim.

The Back into Daylight Animal Sanctuary is based three miles outside Navan on the Kentstown Road and at the moment cares for over 600 animals- goats, pigs, cats, ducks, geese, dogs, pigeons, hens, cockerels, small birds and many more and strive to give them the best life possible.

The sanctuary provides a safe forever home for farmed and domestic animals in need. They also rehabilitate injured and sick wild animals and release them back into the wild.

The registered charity relies on a small group of volunteers and private donors to care for all the animals.
