Third stretch of the Boyne Valley to Lakelands County Greenway open

The third stretch of the Boyne Valley to Lakelands County Greenway opened on Friday linking Nobber and Castletown along the old Navan to Kingscourt Railway Line.

The new 3.5km section includes a cycle and walking bridge over the N52 near Cassidy's Cross and links up the existing short stretches in Nobber and Castletown to provide over 6km of greenway. When the looped walks around Nobber and Castletown villages are included, its brings it to 10km.

Access points to the greenway are located at Casey's Forge, Nobber with another at the centre of the village at Railway View, and at the railway gates at Spiddal on the Nobber/Kells Road. There will also be access from the lane way at the Cross Guns, and at the Castletown and Leggagh Railway Gates, Castletown.

Cllr Eugene Cassidy described the opening of the section on Friday as a "landmark day" for the greenway and thanked GLAS contractors for their work on the project. He added that he was hopeful that the Wilkinstown/Gibbstown section will be opened in time for Hallowe'en.

The Boyne Valley to Lakelands County Greenway project received a major boost in recent weeks with confirmation of €1.8m in funding from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to extend the greenway from Nobber to Kingscourt via Kilmainhamwood.
