Fingal Old IRA hold annual commemoration event

Fingal Old IRA held their annual event last Sunday at the monument in Rath Cross, Ashbourne. The chairman of the Commemorative Society, Paul O'Brien said he was very pleased with the turn out of over 70 people.

The event started with a parade to the monument lead by the colour party, piper and volunteers. Cathaoirleach of Meath Co Council, Cllr Nick Killian addressed the crowd and this was followed by the reading of the Proclamation by Society vice chairman, Lar Daly.

A special plaque to remember local volunteer, Ciaran Benville, who passed away last December was unveiled on the bench beside the monument by Society President, Noel McAllister.

Guest speaker on the day was former Meath football manager Sean Boylan followed by Fingal Mayor Howard Mahony saying a few words. Wreaths were laid by the Cathaoirleach and Mayor of Fingal and this was followed by the National Anthem with a tea and coffee reception at the back of the monument. The chairman wanted to thank the Society committee and volunteers and everyone who attended.
