Mel’s message to the people of Trim for Braveheart anniversary

A specially recorded message from Mel Gibson will be one of the highlights of the 25th anniversary screening of Braveheart in Trim on 13th August.

The Oscar-winning movie was filmed in Trim and other local areas from June to October 1994 and was released in 1995. Covid restrictions halted the 25th anniversary event in 2020, but its lights, cameras, action for the screening this year.

The event is being hosted by Trim Tourism Network- a registered non-profit organisation made up of volunteers from the business community with the aim of combining the skill set of local businesses and individuals to help turn Trim into a major tourism hub.

'Braveheart 25, better late than never', will see the iconic movie screened in front of Trim Castle. A fitting location to stir the memories of those who remember the excitement and buzz that the production brought to the town 28 years ago. Trim Tourism Network have promised lots of activity on the day and are delighted to be welcoming back some of the original cast of the movie for the event.

A specially recorded message from Mel Gibson will be played on the night. Mel Gibson has always been vocal about his fond memories of his time in Trim and the local community that got involved in the filming of the movie.

Michael Hughes, Chairperson of Trim Tourism Network believes that this year marks a significant trilogy of events in history. “This screening of Braveheart is special to us here in Trim this year. Just like William Wallace fought for freedom all those years ago in Scotland, we see the people of Ukraine fighting for their freedom this year. Of course, this year is also the centenary of the death of Michael Collins- and we will be remembering him and his fight for our country.”

Running in tandem with the event is a fundraiser to send several humanitarian 4x4 vehicles to Ukraine. To support this effort, cast from the movie have sent signed photographs to be framed and auctioned at the event.
