Oscar nomination for Jessie Buckley

Actress Jessie Buckley, whose mother, harpist Marina Cassidy is from Kilmainhamwood, was today (Tuesday) named as a surprise Oscar nomination for her role in 'The Lost Daughter'.

Buckley, from Kerry and Kenneth Branagh, Ciarán Hinds and Van Morrison of the movie 'Belfast' are among the nominees for this year's Oscars.

Buckley is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category, with Hinds shortlisted for Best Supporting Actor. Hinds' co-star Judi Dench is also shortlisted in the category.

Buckley fast became a bright young star of musical theatre following her appearance in the BBC programme 'I'd Do Anything'. she was nominated for a BAFTA for her role in 'Beast'.

The Lost Daughter is a 2021 psychological drama film written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal in her feature directorial debut, based on the novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante. The film stars Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Dagmara Domińczyk, Jack Farthing, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, with Peter Sarsgaard, and Ed Harris. Colman also serves as an executive producer on the film. In the film, the lead character, Leda, discloses that she is named for the woman in the WB Yeats poem 'Leda and the Swan', which Yeats based on the Leda story of Greek mythology.

The Lost Daughter had its world premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival in September, where Gyllenhaal won the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay.
