Junction safety measures needed ‘sooner rather than later’

The dangerous junction of the Borallion and the Trim Road in Navan needs safety measures “sooner rather than later”, according to local councillors.

The very busy junction is a straight crossroad and not a staggered cross, Cllr Padraig Fitzsimons explained.

“There had been too many accidents there in recent months and something had to be done urgently.

“It needs lights or some kind of safety measure. It needs to be done as a priority. We cannot wait a number of years.”

Cllr Fitzsimons, who raised the issue at a meeting of Navan Municipal Council said that there were plans for the junction under the project which will see a new spur road from the access road to the M3 to the Trim Road, but that was several years away and safety at the Borallion junction cannot wait.

Director of Services, Martin Murray, said he would speak to the council's transport department about it.

Cllr Eddie Fennessy said safety issues at the Borallion junction have been highlighted by numerous councillors over the years.

“Multiple accidents happen there every year. As a council we really need to put concrete plans in place to address the problem. “

Cllr Fennessy recalled submitting a motion calling for a realignment of the junction and being informed that a safety and capacity review of the existing junction was due to take place as part of the progression of the road linking the Borallion with the Trim Road.

“That the review may result in the generation of a number of possible options for the junction. I ask the council to implement the findings of that report without delay," he said.
