Horgan appointed as new head of Meath football development

In a major restructuring of underage football in the Royal County, Meath GAA have announced Barry Horgan as the new general manager for Meath football from u-13 to u-20.

Barry will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from his time working in professional sports in Australia and in various roles within the GAA to further develop the high performance pathways of footballers and coaches.

Horgan will work with and support the current Coaching & Games staff in Meath GAA and his appointment is one part of an overall strategy to improve the existing football structures.

Horgan is currently employed by the Australian Institute of Sport as a performance scientist and was also the head of performance, academy and pathways with Brumbies Rugby.

Before moving to work in Australia in 2015 Horgan assisted the head of age grade strength & conditioning at Munster Rugby and has also worked with Longford, Cavan and Dublin GAA.

Meath Co Board chairman John Kavanagh is excited about Horgan's appointment and he also revealed John McCarthy will takeover as Meath u-20 football manager with Sean Kelly and Colm Coyle as part of his management team.

Cathal O Bric will maintain his involvement with his All-Ireland MFC winning panel following his appointment as manager of the post minor football panel for 2022 and 2023.

It has also been confirmed that Noel and Valerie Moran of Bective Stud will be the new sponsor of all Meath underage football teams from u-14 to u-20 and their logo will also appear on the senior team's jerseys.

"Ultimately the success of our Academy pathway is the pipeline of talent that is delivered through to our Senior football team," said Kavanagh.

"The recent underage wins, and the implementation of our strategy, will aid and support this process. Barry Horgan’s appointment is integral to achieving this."
