Weather: Mild day but patchy rain and drizzle

The weather will become mostly cloudy this morning with patchy rain and drizzle developing through the afternoon. It will be a cool start but becoming noticeably milder through the evening hours with highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees as southwesterly winds increase fresh to strong maintaining an ongoing risk of coastal flooding.

The latest weather forecast from Met Éireann says tonight will be humid with patchy rain or drizzle at times mainly along Atlantic coasts, with good dry spells elsewhere. Lowest temperature of 10 to 12 degrees while southwest winds will remain mostly fresh with some mist and low cloud especially on higher ground.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) will be a mild and murky day as it remains mostly cloudy with patchy rain and drizzle at times especially along western fringes. Highest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees, however it will remain blustery throughout the day in mostly fresh southerly breezes.

Overall conditions will remain unsettled over the coming days, with cooler conditions developing from midweek.

Rain in the west will spread eastwards across the country on Tuesday night. It will be heaviest and most persistent over the western half of the country, bringing a risk of localised flooding. A mild start to the night but becoming cooler from the west with lowest temperatures of 7 to 12 degrees occurring around dawn. Quite breezy to start with moderate to fresh south winds, strong on coasts, but winds will veer west and ease light to moderate overnight.

Looking ahead to Wednesday and rain will clear eastwards through the morning and afternoon, with sunny spells developing. However, showers will follow from the west with the potential for some heavy falls, particularly over the western half of the country. Turning cool from the west through the morning with highest afternoon temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in moderate to fresh westerly winds, strong in coastal areas.

Scattered showers will persist through Wednesday night but will become more confined to the north and west as the night progresses. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees in moderate to fresh northwest winds.

Thursday: A cool day but largely dry and bright over much of the country as lingering showers ease through the morning. However, cloud will thicken from the west through the afternoon and evening, with rain and drizzle pushing into western areas from the Atlantic during the evening. Highest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees in light westerly breezes, veering southerly later.

Rain will extend eastwards across the country tonight, persistent and heavy at times in the west but patchier elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees occurring early in the night, but becoming milder overnight.

Current indications for Friday are that rain will persist in most areas during the morning but will clear northeastwards during the afternoon. However, patchy drizzle and mist will linger in places through the day. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees in moderate southwest breezes.

Further outlook: Current indications are that it will remain unsettled through to Saturday, with further outbreaks of rain and drizzle. However, drier, brighter intervals will develop on Sunday with more showery conditions.
