Tastes Like Home which features Lynda Gibbons from Navan

Navan cousins on 'Tastes Like Home'

Two Meath cousins will feature in RTE's 'Tastes Like Home' programme next Monday night.

In a new eight part series of the show,  Catherine Fulvio visits families across Ireland who show her how to make their favourite family dishes, before travelling to locations around the world to recreate these 'tastes like home’ for family members now living abroad.

In Monday's show, Catherine Fulvio visits Navan and Dubai, meeting cousins Lynda Gibbons and Aoife Baxter who are both from Navan.

Lynda lives in Navan with husband, William and daughter, Sophie and Aoife has been living and working in Dubai for nearly over 10 years and loves it.

With only three days between Lynda and Aoife in age they grew up more like sisters than cousins and would spend their free time together.

Aside from missing family and friends back in Ireland it’s “pork” Aoife craves so when she’s back in Ireland she’d eat pork every day given the chance.

Lynda and Catherine whip up Aoife’s favourite pork dish, 'Medallions of Pork in a White Wine and Mustard Sauce, served with Champ,' but when Catherine heads to Dubai  to teach Aoife how to make it, Catherine chooses to respect the Muslim culture and tweaks the dish.

Lynda said, “Tastes like Home was a wonderful experience and I enjoyed sharing my family and home with Catherine Fulvio.”  Linda Gibbons

In Dubai Catherine and Aoife took an “abra” a traditional boat across the creek to the Souks - to shop for spices, fish, fruit and vegetables.

Souks are the traditional Arabic market places where goods are bought and sold. No visit to Dubai would be complete without a trip into the Arabian desert, so Catherine went “Dune Bashing” driving 4x4 jeeps up and down the sand dunes at speed, as the sun set Catherine enjoyed a delicious barbecue dinner watching belly dancers performing a show under the stars in the dessert.

“It’s all too easy to get swept along with day to day life and not take the time to stop what I’m doing and appreciate the amazing city I’ve made my home. Even after so many years here, Dubai still takes my breath away. It was a pleasure showing Catherine around some of my favourite places and welcoming her into my home”, said Aoife.

Over the eight episodes Tastes Like Home visits Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa, Vancouver and Tiny Township in Canada, San Sebastián and Barcelona in Spain, as well as Dubai and Portland, Oregon to capture eight individual stories, from contestants who refuse to let the physical distance from home curb their appetite for home-cooked meal that “Tastes Like Home”.
