Another big game at the Aviva for Gary Rogers and Dundalk

For League of Ireland supporters across the board it's the biggest game of the season and there is a big Meath connection with Gary Rogers set to start between the posts for Dundalk after his heroics in the penalty shoot-out win against FC Sheriff.

Tomorrow evening at the Aviva Stadium, Rogers and his Dundalk team mates will tackle a team from the Faroe Islands, Klaksvíkar Ítróttarfelag (KI) in the play-off round of the Europa League with place in the Group phase the reward for the team that wins the one-off tie.

It's all about the money at this stage and a win tomorrow night is worth in the region of €3,000,000 while for the loser there is a decidedly smaller, but in League of Ireland terms, significant, amount of around €300,000.

Therein lies one issue for League of Ireland supporters, they would love nothing more than to see Dundalk advance, but by doing so the Louth club will become even stronger and that will make it even more difficult for the remainder of the pack to catch up and challenge for trophies.

It is that simple.

Dundalk will not win the League title this season, that honour will go to the men who play at Tallaght Stadium who had their own big night in Europe last week when they hosted AC Milan in the Europa League.

You can catch the Europa League action live on RTE 2 tomorrow night in the vastness of an empty Aviva Stadium.

Dundalk cannot host the tie due to stadium requirements at this stage of the competition.

And what about the opposition.

They comprise a mix of nationalities including players from Denmark, Serbia, Slovenia, Nigeria, Poland and Montenegro with the remainder from the Faroe Islands.

To get to this stage of the competition KI were awarded a 3-0 victory against Slovan Bratislava in the first qualifying round of the Champions League after issues over Covid 19.

In the second round they lost to Young Boys in Bern where the Swiss team won by 3-1.

That got them into the Europa League where they are the first Faroese team to qualify for the Europa League play-off round after beating Dinamo Tbilisi (Georgia) 6–1 in the third qualifying round - and that should send a warning to Dundalk.

Previous victories in Europe were achieved against Birkirkara (Malta) and Tre Fiori (San Marino) in the Europa League and against Lithuanian side Zalgiris in last season’s first round.

KI are ranked 88 places below Dundalk in the UEFA coefficient rankings.

For Dundalk, it's a hugely important game on a number of fronts, none more so than for the financial rewards, but also for the status of the League of Ireland.

Tune into the game tomorrow night, even if it's only because there is a Meath involvement.

There is Gary Rogers, there is also a Drumbaragh man likely to be on the panel in Jimmy Corcoran and a Stamullen man in Greg Sloggett.
