Coronavirus precaution as schools cross-country races are postponed

The decision has been made to cancel the Meath Primary Schools Cross-Country Championships as a precaution against the spread of the Coronavirus COVAD-19.

The races which attracts young athletes from schools all over Meath were due to take place in the Navan Adventure Centre tomorrow (Friday) starting at 11am.

However the decision has been taken to call off the races to avoid what has been termed "unnecessary gatherings," according to a statement that appeared on the Meath Athletics Facebook page today.

"In the light of advice received, we are taking the prudent precaution of making the above decisions in order to avoid unnecessary gatherings," the statement read.

"This decision has not been taken lightly. We will look at other events as matters unfold over the next weeks."

The schools cross-country event is the latest sporting fixture to be affected by the Coronavirus outbreak in this country. One of the first to be cancelled was the Ireland v Italy Six Nations game which was due to take place in Dublin this weekend.

Earlier this week O'Growney National School in Athboy was closed as a precaution against the spred of the Coronavirus which the authorities are clearly concerned will spread further.
