Council to meet next week to co-opt new councillors

With two former members of Meath County Council set to take up seats in the Dail, the council will meet next Monday afternoon at 4.30pm to co-opt two new members.
Sinn Féin will nominate two people to fill the vacancies left by the departure of two of its councillors, Johnny Guirke, who was a member for the Kells Muncipal District and Darren O'Rourke who was elected a councillor in the Ashbourne electoral area.

Both O’Rourke and Guirke were elected to the Dail in the general election.
Sinn Féin will hold conventions in both the Kells and Ashbourne areas on Thursday night, to select the candidates for co-option to the council.
Nominations for those conventions closed yesterday (Wednesday).
While it isn't known how many will be in the running for the co-options, the front runners are expected to be Michael Gallagher in the Kells area and Aisling O'Neill in Ashbourne.

Michael Gallagher is a former County Councillor who lost his seat in last year's local elections, while Aisling O'Neill was a Sinn Fein candidate in the local elections.
Meanwhile, it is now believed that Sligoman, Chris McManus is likely to take up the role of MEP to replace Matt Carthy who was elected to the Dáil for Cavan Monaghan.
Navan's Caoimhe ni Shluain who was on Carthy's list of substitutes is believed to gave decided to turn down the position because of family commitments. She is the mother of a three weeks old baby.
