Athletes brave wintry conditions to take part in Bohermeen race

Despite biting cold and driving wind athletes turned out big numbers for the annual Bohermeen Half-Marathon today with the race won by Ethiopian Yared Dersese in fine style. He crossed the finishing line in  1:07.04.

Derese took a grip on the race from very early on and strolled to victory in very wintry conditions. The women's race was claimed by Caitriona Jennings from Letterkenny AC. Jennings has represented Ireland in the past.

The first Meath runner home was Sean Murphy in the colours of Trim AC while the first female runner from a Meath club across the line was Caitriona O'Brien from Bohermeen AC.

A heavy hail shower just before the start was just one of the difficult challenges the runners faced but they appeared undaunted as they started out on a course around the roads of Bohermeen.

Murphy finished ahead of the next Meath runner Richie Bell (Fr Murphy) with Gerry O'Reilly (Dunboyne) third in the Meath Spring Half-Marathon ratings. In the women's race O'Brien was followed home by Sabrina Keogh (Dunboyne AC) and Ellen Vitting (Trim) in Meath rankings.

The event was very well organised and is now clearly one of the most popular races in Leinster if not the country.
