Fianna Fail not in a position to fill council Ashbourne council seat yet

The Fianna Fail party organisation in Meath will not be in a position to fill the vacant seat in the Ashbourne municipal area at Monday's meeting of the county council, as a convention has to be held to decide on a successor for Sean Smith.

On 12th September, Sean Smith informed the council he was stepping down as a public representative, as he is moving with his family to the USA, where his wife, Meghan, is from.

The position is due to be filled at Monday's meeting of the local authority, but the party has not yet held a convention.

A spokesperson says they will fill it at the December meeting. Membership have to be informed of the date for convention, and candidates. Up to six or seven are believed to be interested.

Among names being touted are former councillor, Conor Tormey, who has since had a stint as Meath Co GAA board chairman, and former Meath footballer and local election candidate, Joe Sheridan.
