Trick or Treat safety advice

Gardai urge parents to be vigilant over Halloween

Local Gardai are appealing to parents to be aware of what their children are doing tonight, who they are with, where they are going, what time they will be home at - teenagers in particular.

"If they have fireworks take them off them and destroy them in a bucket of water. It is an offence to possess fireworks without a licence and an offence to throw an ignited firework at a person or property. They are heavy penalties for doing so," said a Garda spokesperson.

"Every year children get injured in accidents with fireworks. We also ask parents to talk to their children about the importance of having fun but not to annoy other people in their community.

"If you are taking small children out trick or treating the adult should have good reflective clothing and a torch as small kids dressed in black can be hard to see - motorists should be aware of these children in housing estates especially from dusk tomorrow evening. And there will be extra resources working tomorrow night in all Districts in Meath."
