Navan bridge to re-open on 31st August

The Kentstown Road Bridge in Navan will reopen to traffic on Friday 31st August, bringing much needed relief to motorists in the town as schools re-open.

The bridge at the junction of the Navan Inner Relief and Kentstown Roads has been closed for the past two months as work continues on the provision of a new four-metre wide cycle/pedestrian bridge to the side of the existing structure.
A spokesperson for Meath County Council said this week the bridge would reopen on 31st of this month, but localised temporary traffic management measures will be necessary on the Kentstown Road and the R147 after that date, with potentially some need for short term closures to allow specific works to be completed, such as the installation of the secondary steel members to the bridge.
"Traffic Management Plans will be implemented to minimise the levels and duration of disruption anticipated, and measures will be implemented where practicable to reduce the potential impact of the works on the free flow of traffic through and around the town. Advance warning signs will be provided on all approach roads and will provide regular updates," she said.
"It is currently anticipated that the bridge and related works will be completed in December of this year and will be in place for decades to come.
"During the summer holiday period, piles and pile caps were constructed at the bridge, and the primary steel members installed. Footpath works were also completed on the Kentstown Road. It is anticipated that remaining new footpaths to be constructed on the Kentstown Road and those on the bridge will be completed by 31st August. In addition, the new road surface and line marking will also completed on the Kentstown Road," she said.
The cantilevered bridge will be like a boardwalk spanning over the River Boyne. A new shared cyclist/pedestrian surface will be provided on the Kentstown Road to link the new bridge to the junction of Convent Lane, with upgraded public lighting throughout. New footpaths and a raised table pedestrian crossing at the junction of the Convent Lane and Kentstown Road are also to be constructed. The junction of the R147/R153/Timmons Hill will include pedestrian crossings on each arm to facilitate safe crossings at this busy intersection.
