Thousands of houses were without water

Water should be restored this evening as repair completed

The water supply should be restored to all areas this evening, Meath County Council  has confirmed.

A repair to the burst water main at Proudstown is now complete and the pipe is being re-charged. Supply should be restored to affected areas, which included the town centre and the north and west of the town, as well as Dunderry and Bohermeen, Gibbstown/Oristown later this evening

Less than a week after the last water crisis affecting the south and the east of the county abated, there were more water woes in Meath with the entire town of Navan and many surrounding areas left without water following a major burst in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday).

At around 3.30am, the water supply exploded through the Proudstown Road, close to Simonstown Gael's football grounds- the second major leak at the same location in recent times. It caused extensive flooding in the immediate area including the home of Jim and Joan Murtagh, whose home was also destroyed during the last burst in December 2015.

Shortly after the leak was reported this morning, the water was turned off and crews from Navan Fire Service were deployed to pump water out of the affected homes and off the road. The R162 Navan to Kingscourt Road was closed for several hours as repairs were carried out.
