‘Something needs to be done before another child is killed at that junction’

The father of a nine-year-old boy who was seriously injured after being struck by a car in Navan last week has made an impassioned plea for something to be done with the busy junction before another child is injured or killed.
Liam Meehan suffered extensive injuries when he was struck by a car at the junction of the Kells Road and the Inner Relief Road at 3.05pm on Thursday afternoon and he remains in Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin where his condition is now thankfully stable.
However, his father Norman Murray said he is still a “very sick little boy” and it is a waiting game to see what damage may have been caused by the head injury.
“We still don’t know if we will get the same boy out of hospital that went in,” he said.

Liam turned nine on Sunday and sadly spent his birthday in hospital. Norman said something should have been done with the junction after the first accident which claimed the life of eleven-year-old Elrich Caputo last October.
“For the volume of traffic there, something has to be done. Something should have been done straight after the last accident.
“I was coming home yesterday evening and three little kids were nearly knocked down.”
Navan Mayor Tommy Reilly (below) said the junction must be included in the €12m traffic plan.

A spokesperson for Meath County Council said it will liaise with the Gardaí to gather information on the particular circumstances of this collision and to establish what factors may have contributed to the accident and what actions are recommended.”
