Replacement bike keeps Cornyn's Euro hopes intact

Dunboyne AC's Niall Cornyn is this week finalising preparations for the u-23 ETU Duathlon European Championships in Soria, a city in north central Spain, on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th April - all thanks to a replacement bike after a traffic incident put his own one out of commission.

Cornyn recently received the good news that he was selected to represent Ireland at the championships and now he has the chance to shine on the international stage.

However, he is fortunate to be in a position to compete as while out training recently Cornyn was fortunate to escape injury following a joust with a car near Straffan, but his bike was extensively damaged.

Niall was in luck in the way J Stagg Cycles in Lucan came to his rescue by offering to lend him a bicycle of the required standard for his trip to Spain.

The duathlon involves the athletes participating in a 10k run followed by a 40k cycle with a 5k run completing the event.

With selection on the Irish team in mind Cornyn has been training hard over the last six months.

A student of Dublin City University, Cornyn recently represented his alma mater in the National Universities Athletic Championships. He was part of the DCU team that claimed gold in the swimming event at the championships.

Cornyn also took part in a university triathlon event last Saturday and put in a strong display in the riding event, especially in the early stages.

Cornyn is now one of the top u-23 triathletes in Ireland and also competes in the Category One Elite senior competitions.
