Waterboys' Steve Wickham and stellar line-up at The Folk Club at Beggys

Beggy’s music venue in Navan will host a unique night of music tonight when The Folk Club will see an exciting line up of nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians and writers take to the stage.

Steve Wickham from legendary band The Waterboys will be playing his classic songs and showcasing superb new tunes from his forthcoming solo album “The Beekeeper”.
Steve has toured and recorded with the likes of
U2 , REM, The Lost Brothers and Elvis Costello to name but a few. He also played with Bob Dylan onstage in Slane in 1984.

Also on the bill is “the jewel of all Irish songwriters” Ger Wolfe. A native of West Cork Ger is widely regarded as one of the finest Irish songwriters and singers of the last twenty-five years. His talent broke to a larger audience when he played the first ever series of Other Voices with Glen Hansard in 2003 in Dingle and he has since released several acclaimed albums of stunning original and traditional songs.
Also sharing the stage tonight will be Ye Vagabonds who are fast becoming the new Sweeney's Men of 2017. Their multi-instrumental interpretations of classic Irish folk and traditional song have been celebrated widely.

Just last year they travelled to the Island of Inisheer where they collected songs from Donal Lunny and Andy Irvine. These two brothers are the younger generations coming through on the folk scene.

World renowned poet and publisher Peter Fallon will also be in Beggy's to read from his many published works and collaborate with talented local Meath artist and singer Saramai Leech.
Peter has worked in the world of literature, folk tradition and song since the 1960s with the likes of Luke Kelly and others. He established Gallery Press publications who were the first to publish Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney and has since published dozens other great writers including Dermot Healy. Saramai Leech's debut album is due out later in 2017 and is hugely anticipated.

The evening of music is organised by Beggy's and local musician Oisin Leech who is better known as one half of local band The Lost Brothers. “It’s shaping up to be an exciting evening of song, laughter and chat” explains Oisin.
“We have a few surprise guests also coming along and we are honoured to have these artists on the way to Meath. It's not often you see so many great musicians and writers under the same roof. I might even bring the harmonicas and sing one myself.
'We went to Arizona in November to record the new Lost Brothers album and that will be released in the Autumn” says Oisin.
“But I'm home now and it's nice to have time away from touring while we get ready for the new Lost Brothers release later this year,
“Whenever I'm off the road I love to sit in on the music sessions in Beggys. One night I said to Stevey... 'how about a Folk Club where we invite pals to Meath to perform?'..He said 'let's do it' and The Folk Club was born.'
“I've been getting a few tips from people about how to run a folk club! They were around well before I was born!”

“It’s also a bit of fun to see some of the best performers in the world gig in our local music venue in Navan” explains Oisin.
The music will begin at 830pm and for more information on “The Folk Club” visit Beggys Bar Navan on Facebook.
