No HSA investigation into Tayto Park stair collapse

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has confirmed that it will not be carrying out an investigation into the collapse of a staircase at Tayto Park on Saturday.

However, the authority said it would examine compliance with construction regulations as work had recently been carried out on the House of Horrors attraction.

Nine people were taken to hospital on Saturday evening after the lower portion of the staircase leading to the House of Horrors attraction collapsed.

A HSA spokeperson said the authority has the power to investigate work-related incidents involving employees or members of the public affected by work activity.

'The type of situation involving a member of the public being injured on a theme park ride is a public safety issue and outside the scope of our remit,' the spokesperson said.

'The Health and Safety Authority has examined the circumstances surrounding the stair collapse at Tayto Park last Saturday. As there was no construction activity associated with the accident at the time, the authority will not be carrying out an investigation of the collapse itself.

'Because construction work on the House of Horrors attraction took place recently, we will examine compliance with the requirements of the Construction Regulations that would have applied at the time of construction.'
