Moynalty the centre of attention as race draws to a conclusion

Cyclists involved in the Race Around Ireland are continuing to finish the arduous, highly-demanding event at Moynalty Steam Threshing Museum as the race draws to a gradual conclusion.
The cyclists are finishing the event - which is organised by Meathman and well-known cyclists Alan Heary - at different times and are likely to continue to do so in the coming days.
The first home was Pat Doocey who has cycled in the colours of Navan Road Club in the past. He won the 1,100km Irish Ultra Challenge (individual) event which finished yesterday (Wednesday).
The Ultra Challenge cyclists started out with the rest of the riders from Trim Castle last Sunday and in subsequent days made their way round the northern part of Ireland.
Close to Galway they headed across Ireland to finish in Moynalty while the rest of the cyclists continued to make their way south and complete the full circuit of the island of Ireland which is 2,200km with the finish also in the picturesque north Meath village.
Riders from 12 different countries including America, Austria and Switzerland set out to complete the full circuit of the country in less than five days. Sleep deprivation is one of the many challenges they face.
The Race Around Ireland is an Ultra Marathon Cycling Association (UMCA) World Cup event and is the second highest ranked race of its kind in the world. The race is also a qualifying event for the arduous Race Across America, an event Doocey took part in last year as a member of Alan Heary’s team.
“It was fantastic to see such a large crowd come to Trim to support the riders at the start,” commented Heary. “You can also watch live tracking on our website thanks to our partners Blackblox to see when the riders will finish in the Moynalty Steam Threshing Museum, which is our new finish line and new race headquarters with a special thanks to the Moynalty Cycling Club.
“We couldn’t put this race together without our sponsors like Carvalho Custom, Budget Signs and Europcar, but getting people to come out and support the riders is hugely important and very much appreciated by the racers.”
