Over 1000 attend funeral of lorna carty in robinstown

Over 1,000 people have attended the funeral of Lorna Carty, the mother-of-two from Robinstown, who was killed in the Tunisian beach terrorist attack just over a week ago.

Members of the Meath Senior football team, Dunderry GAA intermediate team and the Dunderry camogie teams formed a guard of honour as Mrs Carty's remains arrived at the Church of the Assumption in Robinstown from her home at nearby Retaine.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny and President Michael D Higgins were both represented at the funeral Mass by their respective aides de camp.

Local parish priest Fr Noel Horneck told her husband Declan, son Simon and daughter Hazel in his homily: 'I have no words of human comfort to ease your loss. But we, as neighbours, as a community, as friends in shock, we can only be there with you in your loss, walk with you, accompany you in so far as we can. Because the depth of loss is yours and yours alone. We can only be there with you and for you during those times you need some companionship, someone just to be there for you.'

Monsignor Sean Heaney, Vicar-General of the Diocese of Meath, was representing the Bishop of Meath, Dr Michael Smith, who was unable to be present due to a prior engagement. He said that on his visit to the Carty home on Friday afternoon, Bishop Smith was most impressed by the obvious sense of solidarity and support shown for the family from the community of Robinstown and the whole parish of Dunderry. 'This sense of solidarity extends far beyond the local community into the diocese, and indeed the whole nation,' added Fr Henry.

Also present in the church were the Church of Ireland Bishop of Meath & Kildare, Patricia Storey, and Sheikh Umar Al Quadri of the Coolmine Islamic Centre in Dublin.

Mrs Carty's remains were laid to rest in Retaine Cemetery following the funeral Mass. Moving tributes were paid to Lorna in the cemetery by her husband Declan, daughter Hazel and son Simon.
