12m for countys regional and local roads

Over €12 million has been earmarked for investment in regional and local roads throughout County Meath this year.
The funding forms part of a national investment programme of €294 million, which will allow for the maintenance and strengthening of roughly 2,000km of regional and local road to be maintained and strengthened in 2015.
According to Meath West Fine Gael TD Ray Butler, local and regional roads in Meath are in need of investment following a number of severe winters.
“In order to bring roads in the area up to standard, €1,845,869 will go towards maintenance works and €10,379,422 will be allocated for improvement works across the county,” he said.
His FG colleague Helen McEntee added that the funding will be awarded in addition to local authorities’ own resources. “County councils are best placed to assess priorities within their areas and are responsible for their work programme,” she said.

Meanwhile, as the Better Roads for North Meath campaign prepares to hold another public meeting this weekend, chairman Cllr Johnny Guirke expressed frustration at what he called successive governments’ “lip service” to the roads crisis in the north of the county.

He invited public representatives to attend the meeting this Friday, 6th February, at 8.30pm in Teach Fada, Kilskyre.
