The late Brendan Megraw.

Bog remains formally confirmed as ira victim brendan megraw

The remains of a man found in local bog last month as part of the search for one of 'The Disappeared' have been formally confirmed as Brendan Megraw.

The Independent Commission for the Location of Victims Remains (ICLVR) had been surveying the bog in Oristown, Kells, in early October as part of the search for Brendan, who went missing when he was 23 from the Twinbrook area of Belfast in 1978, when the discovery of the body was made.

DNA results carried out on the remains confirmed that the body is that of Mr Megraw, who was abducted, murdered and secretly buried by the IRA.

The Independent Commission for the Location of Victims Remains confirmed the results of the DNA tests this evening. It is understood Dublin City Coroner Dr Brian Farrell accepted this as evidence of identification and will shortly authorise the release of the remains to the family.

The Megraw family indicated that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
