Death of commitments actor maura omalley

Maura O'Malley from Stackallen, who played the mother of Joey the Lips in Roddy Doyle's 'The Commitments' has died, aged 94.

Born on 12th November 1919 in Ballintobber, Claremorris, Co Mayo, Ms O'Malley was the second eldest of seven children. She worked as a PE teacher for six years after studying physical education in Scotland, and gaining her degree.

She was one of the founding members of physical education in Ireland and also Ireland's first PE teacher.

Ms O'Malley then moved from education into acting and starred in several American films, and more notably, two popular Irish films, 'Waking Ned' and 'The Commitments'.

She died peacefully at Kilmainhamwood Nursing Home, Kells, survived  by her sisters Annie, Margaret and Grainne, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends

Her remains are reposing at St Joseph’s Chapel of Rest , Old Johnstown, Navan from 3pm Friday with removal at 5.15pm to St. Patrick’s Church, Slane, to arrive for 6pm. Mass on Saturday at 11am. Removal afterwards to her nephew Brian O’Malley’s residence Skehanagh, Ballintubber, Co Mayo. Reposing at Brian's residence from 5pm Saturday with removal on Sunday morning at 11.15am to Ballintubber Abbey arriving for 11.30 funeral Mass followed by burial in adjoining cemetery.
