Contempo Quartet to tour to Navan

The Galway Music Residency is bringing a special contemporary musical and visual performance event around the country for its fifth national tour inspired by the iconic Steve Reich work, 'Different Trains'. The tour, which visits Solstice Arts Centre, Navan, on 16th October, boasts an exceptional programme featuring works by Irish, American and German composers including ‘Different Trains’ which will be performed by The Galway Ensemble in Residence, ConTempo Quartet. Evocative imagery created by video artist Mihai Cucu completes the audience experience of this unique musical journey.

The programme for the tour features the recently premiered hearing leaves by Karen Power which was commissioned by The Galway Music Residency to celebrate their tenth anniversary in 2012 and Mystic Play of Shadows written in 1995 by Galway-based composer Jane O’Leary. The oldest piece in the programme, Beethoven’s Great Fugue while 200 years oldwas described by Igor Stravinsky as ‘contemporary forever’ and will provide a challenging contrast to the more recently written pieces. The programme will culminate with Steve Reich’s award-winning work for string quartet and tape Different Trains which is a response to train travel in the US and Europe at the time of World War I.  The performance on the evening will be completed with a creative visual interpretation of this journey by visual artist Mihai Cucu.

The Galway Music Residency delivers a year round performance, education and community based programme of events which includes visits by the Galway Ensemble in Residence – ConTempo Quartet to local schools and universities, mini-residencies with guest artists from Ireland, Europe and other parts of the world, as well as monthly free concerts in the Galway City Library on the first Tuesday of every month.  The Galway Music Residency National Tour is supported by The Arts Council, National University of Ireland, Galway, Galway University Foundation, Bank of Ireland, Galway City and County Councils and Friends of The Galway Music Residency.
