Tones hit high notes to book semi-final spot

Producing some excellent, first-rate football Wolfe Tones deservedly defeated Skryne 3-12 to 3-10 in the SFC quarter-final at Pairc Tailteann this evening.

The Tones were by some distance the better team, especially in the opening half and with the help of a Stephen Sheppard goal they led 1-8 to 1-5 at the interval. Skryne's goal came from an Ian Davis penalty.

In the second-half Darren Fay's side continued to create chances and goals from Eanna Harrington and Cian Ward, who racked up 1-9 over the hour,  ensured they stayed in front.

Skryne kept battling away, came more into the game as the evening wore on and they were awarded with late goals from Kevin Mulvany and Mark Jordan. Mulvany's goal was controversial as he seemed to fist the ball from his hands into the net however after consulting the umpire referee Patrick Nelis allowed the score to stand.

It would have been an injustice if Skryne had won with that goal in their tally but as it turned out Tones stayed strong to secure a semi-final tie with either Moynalvey or Na Fianna. Right at the end Skryne's Declan Morley was sent off.
