Ciaran Breslin, cycling from Navan to Donegal for the Irish Cancer Society

No smartphones allowed at Google-killer quiz!

The arrival of the smartphone has been good for many, many things, but there’s little doubt it’s been bad for that long-time fundraising staple - the table quiz.
Whereas in the past people might have been racking their brains over the capital of Kenya or the highest mountain in north America, these days the answers to all such 'general knowledge’ questions are available to the uncharitable table-quizzer at a couple of discreet swipes of an iPhone.
But that doesn’t mean the table quiz has to be a thing of the past, and the Google-Killer Charity Table Quiz at Ryan’s Bar, Navan this Friday night, 31st May aims to bring the good old quiz back to life - with some novel tinkering to the standard quiz format. It is part of Bressie’s Charity Cycle Weekend, which sees Ciaran Breslin from Kilcarn Court in Navan saddle up for the 230km spin from Navan to Ardara this coming Saturday, 1st June.
“People used to love a good quiz but the fun started to go out of them with the arrival of text messaging. Nowadays, with iPhones and other smartphones, virtually everyone is walking around with the world’s most powerful encyclopaedia in their pockets,” says Google-Killer quiz organiser, Ciaran’s brother, Shane.
So how does the Google-Killer Table Quiz work? Well, there will be questions, of course. But they’re the type of questions you’ll find it almost impossible to punch into Google and come up with the right answer in 10 seconds flat.
Rounds will consist of pictures, riddles, anagrams, puzzles and lots more - and the only thing each set of questions will have in common is the promise that the answers won’t be readily available to under-the-table Googlers.
Ciaran’s journey connects the home towns of his parents - Kathleen comes from Navan while Sean moved to Meath from Ardara in the 1970s - while the west coast Donegal town is also home to Ciaran’s five-year-old son Jack. Ciaran - who prides himself on being Ireland’s second-best-looking Bressie - will set off from Garlow Cross at approximately 6am on Saturday morning and aims to arrive in Ardara at around 3pm later that day.
A table of four for the Google-Killer Table Quiz costs €40, while those interested in sponsoring Bressie’s Charity Cycle can do so at www.mycharity.ie/event/ciaran_breslins_event.
All proceeds from both Bressie’s Charity Cycle Weekend events go to the Irish Cancer Society.
