Quinn announces VEC as patron of new schools

Meath will have two new secondary schools, catering for over 2,000 pupils, within the next two years. The Minister for Education, Ruari Quinn, announced last week that County Meath VEC would be the patron body for two new 1,000 pupil schools in Ashbourne and Navan. Minister Quinn announced proposals for the two new schools last year and Meath VEC applied for patronage for both schools. The minister said last week that in making the decision, he was particularly conscious of the clear parental demand for plurality and diversity of patronage. Meath VEC has unveiled the working titles for the two new schools as Coláiste na Mí in Navan, which will commence in 2013 and De Lacy College in Ashbourne which will commence in 2014. The VEC CEO, Peter Kierans, welcomed the decision and he commended the VEC team of Elma McMahon and Christy Duffy who led the application. To read the full story see this week's Meath Chronicle.
