Fred Reilly... collapsed on bridge over M3.

Navan taxi driver says he owes life to RTE's Derek Mooney

A local man who collapsed on an M3 overpass while out cycling has said he owes his life to RTE DJ Derek Mooney who stopped his car on the motorway, scaled the embankment and performed CPR. Fred Reilly from Hanlonstown, Navan, had cycled to Trim on Wednesday evening of last week and was on his way home when he stopped at the M3 bridge on the Trim-Navan Road, where he collapsed after becoming unwell. DJ Derek Mooney was travelling along the motorway when he noticed the cyclist collapse and pulled in on the hard shoulder, climbed up the embankment and across the railings to come to Mr Reilly's assistance. He alerted the emergency services before performing CPR. Mr Reilly, who is a driving instructor, was taken by ambulance to Our Lady's Hospital, Navan, where he underwent a number of tests and was kept in hospital overnight. Thankfully, the tests came back clear and Mr Reilly is back at work this week after his dramatic ordeal. Mr Reilly told the Meath Chronicle how he was out cycling and stopped for a drink but felt "a bit queazy" and fell. "I woke on the ground with a cut face, nose and lip, and was bleeding. I came to and stood without realising that, after fainting, I shouldn't have stood up. I was holding the bridge and walking slowly along holding the bridge with one hand and my bicycle with the other. I don't remember after that," said Mr Reilly.
