Mark Smith spoke to Kells Town Council about enhancing the arts in the region.

Local artists suggest sculpture trail in Kells

Proposals for a sculpture trail in Kells were among the ideas put forward at a meeting of Kells Town Council last week by Kellective, a new arts organisation formed by local artists. Artists Mark Smith and Patrick Morris spoke to the council about their plans, which include a sulpture trail, with the sculptures changing over time, so that people would have a reason to return again to see them. The Kellective was formed by five local artists - the other three are Eoin Wall, Fiona Murphy and Ian Rogan - and they also hope to encourage other artists to join them, including potters, ceramicists and even musicians. They hope to make Kells a hub for artists in the north-east. Mark Smith told the meeting that the concept was about enhancing the arts in the region and they have been working with Kells Chamber of Commerce and Kells Tourism Forum to to get a space in the town from which they could run a number of projects. He explained that they had spoken to the council's arts officer and they would also talk to the heritage and conservation officer. The meeting heard that the groups had been in contact with the town engineer to discuss suitable locations for sculptures. The meeting heard that some of the artists had pieces in storage that could be included in the trail over the next few months.
